Supporting Disaster Relief

Comments Off on Supporting Disaster Relief

Photo of Nan LansingerAt Pennsylvania Trust, we are deeply moved about the loss of lives and destruction that the recent series of hurricanes and earthquakes has caused, especially in areas where our clients reside.

Now, more than ever, we as individuals may wish to support organizations, such as the American Red Cross, that are providing relief to victims of these natural disasters. If you are thinking of making a gift either now—in support of hurricane or earthquake relief—or later as part of your year-end giving, here are a few things to consider:

  • Do the Research:
    • Read about the charity before making your gift. Sites such as Charity Navigator offer a wealth of information to help you make the best decision.
  • Keep Specifics in Mind:
    • You may want to call the charity if you have questions about how they will use your gift. Also be cautious about charities that are very new and are short on details.
  • Think Local:
    • Organizations that have deep ties to the local community often know how to make the biggest impact and are there for the long run.

Thinking of Donating Now?

If you’d like to donate now to support hurricane or earthquake relief, you might consider the American Red Cross or the Global Giving Foundation. These organizations are coordinating with people on the ground in Florida, Texas, and Mexico – helping people regain their lives.

Checking Out Charities

Charitable giving tends to follow three separate lines of behavior. The first is to annually donate to the same, favorite charities you have supported for many years. The connections to theses charities may be rooted in family history, personal history or personal stewardship. The second might be a more flexible budget for additional requests, fundraisers, and the numerous walk and run sponsorships that arise from time to time. The third is an appeal that arrives, unexpectedly, in the mail, online, or from a friend, one that does precisely what it’s supposed to: engage just enough to avoid instant rejection.
